NTT DOCOMO will launch trials of 5G communications technologies in collaboration with worldwide major vendors, such as Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Fujitsu, NEC, Nokia and Samsung, reported Asahi Shimbun on May 9. Indoor trials will be conducted at the DOCOMO R&D Center in Kanagawa this year, followed by field trials in 2015. The experiments will test the potential of 5G mobile technologies to utilize frequency bands above 6 GHz and realize very high system capacity per unit area, and new radio technologies to support applications like M2M (Machine-to-Machine) services. The 5G technology is set for commercialization in 2020.
